Hideaways' Take
|
There’s nothing more utopian than a private island, especially with a resort this inviting—and we love that it’s environmentally friendly, too.

Hideaways' Review
Sugar-soft white beaches, palms waving in the Caribbean breeze, island-style bungalows drowsing in the sun . . . whoever first called this secluded haven Prune Island was sorely lacking in vision. In fact, tiny Palm Island has only recently come into its own, after misguided attempts in centuries past to establish lime and sea-salt plants here. Now vacationers share the serene 135-acre island with iguanas and land turtles, bananaquits and herons, wandering its nature trails and settling into their own natural and elegant habitat at this all-inclusive getaway.
Everything about Palm Island Resort, refurbished and reopened in 1999, is designed to pamper both its guests and its environment. Bamboo and rattan furnishings, traditional louvered windows, and vivid local paintings give beachfront and palm-view rooms an easy-in-the-islands feel; yet there’s no shortage of amenities such as plush bath robes and deep soaking tubs. Two things you won’t find in the rooms are telephones and TVs—leaving all the more time to lounge in a hammock at the beach, play croquet or tennis, revel in a massage, or take a day-trip to the Tobago Cays for some spectacular snorkeling or scuba diving. While the world seems far away, there’s nothing provincial about the Euro-Caribbean cuisine served at the oceanside Royal Palm restaurant and the more rustic Sunset Bar and Grill (featuring flavors from the resort’s hydroponic herb garden). Go ahead, indulge—all meals and drinks by the glass and activities are covered by the all-inclusive price. |
