Hideaways' Review
Just across the bay are the lights, glitz, and bustle of Cancun, but tiny Isla Mujeres—the Isle of Women—is all about local color and serenity. White-sand beaches and warm turquoise water, working fishing boats and low buildings painted pastel hues set the relaxed scene. Tucked away on a spit of land with its back to a lagoon once used by pirates and its face to the Caribbean, the Hotel Villa Rolandi keeps its distance even from the island’s single town, treasuring its sense of seclusion and the comfort of its guests.
Water is a constant presence from the moment visitors arrive by private yacht from the mainland. The Mexican/Mediterranean-style hotel’s pool, international bar, and restaurant overlook the sea and peerless sunsets each evening. Each of the 20 junior suites boasts not just a spectacular ocean view, but also a private Jacuzzi® on the balcony from which to soak it in. Multi-jet showers in the green marble-lined bathrooms double as steam rooms. All sorts of marine pastimes are at hand, from sailing and diving the world’s second-longest barrier reef to swimming with dolphins and visiting a nearby sea turtle farm.
Fine food, as the hotel’s name suggests, is the other constant. While Continental breakfast is served in-room, guests enjoy memorable lunches and dinners at the acclaimed Casa Rolandi, which serves up wonderful views and even more wonderful Swiss/Northern Italian specialties such as tuna carpaccio, seafood risotto, and other dishes baked in a wood-fired oven. |
