Iceland Slideshow
Cruising Around the South Coast
By Hideaways President Mike Thiel
-
Birds-Eye View
A great way to get an overview of Iceland and see its waterfalls and geothermal
activity up close and personal is with a helicopter tour. We flew with
Nordurflug, Iceland's largest helicopter company, out of their base at
Reykjavik's in-town airport.
-
Thermal Vent
Thermal vents and glacial streams like these are an intriguing sight throughout
Iceland.
-
Land of Waterfalls
Iceland is known for its many beautiful waterfalls, some tall, some wide, but
each impressive.
-
Super Jeep Tour
No visit to Iceland would be complete without exploring its rugged landscape.
You'll find multiple ways to do that—ski-mobiling on glaciers, horse
trekking, hiking, or, as we did, on a Super Jeep tour.
-
Hiking Glacial Washouts
For half a day, we bounced over volcanic washout plains and through glacial
streams, climbed inside the face of a glacier, hiked to a hidden flume, and
marveled at waterfalls big and small. It was a great day!
-
The Big Chill
You can actually walk inside a glacier. Just be careful about falling stones
and debris melting out of the glacier's face and dropping on your head!
-
Greek to Me!
How's your Icelandic? While it is the official--and difficult to
pronounce--language, English (thankfully) is widely spoken.
-
Outdoor Barrel Sauna
Here's a clever design for an outdoor sauna, Icelandic-style!
-
Black-Sand Beach
A drive along Iceland's South Coast will reward you with long swaths of
black-sand beaches--and you won't have to fight for beach-towel space here.
-
Frisky Critters
Icelandic horses (not ponies!) are everywhere. Rugged and stout, they can carry
a lot of weight and handle rough terrain. These were super friendly!
-
Hotel Rangá
We'd heard great things about this South Coast lodge that looks very similar to
lodges you might find on the Montana range. We loved its position on the East
Rangá River, surrounded by rolling farmland and dramatic mountains.
-
Sweet Suite!
Hotel Rangá sports seven spacious suites, each themed for one of the world's
continents. We stayed in the Antarctic Suite, mostly because it felt most like
being in Iceland. We looked in on the Africa suite and it was really
atmospheric, too--a tough choice between the two.
