Hideaways' Review
"I speak of open valleys/Fertile at men's feet/Overgrown with flowers/Of captive summits/Of mountains, of clear skies . . .," writes Scottish poet John Burnside in "Landscapes." He may as well have been writing from beside a window at The Fairmont Banff Springs. This stately, turreted, Scottish baronial castle-cum-hotel sits inside Banff National Park at the intersection of three glacial valleys and the confluence of the Bow and Spray Rivers. Because of this, the 770 guest rooms all share a common trait—windows that open onto fresh, crisp air and vistas of mountains, meadows, or valleys.
The resort delivers just what its 19th-century founder intended—a unique blend of majestic scenery, European-style luxury, and flawless service which, even today, few hotels can rival. Accommodations, which range from snug Fairmont rooms to split-level suites, are Tudor, Scottish, and country-English in style with chandeliers, richly woven fabrics, and ornate moldings. The acclaimed and recently refurbished 38,000-square-foot Willow Stream Spa features a Hungarian mineral pool and a colonnaded lap pool, as well as locally inspired "mountain magic" treatments. A challenging Stanley Thompson-designed 18-hole golf course might bring out the duffer in you, while the 9-hole Tunnel Mountain course is for the fainter of heart. Wintertime brings access to three nearby, world-class ski areas, as well as a multitude of al fresco adventures. And when you return from your outdoor exploits, you'll find nearly a dozen fine restaurants and bars to wet your whistle and whet your appetite. Your spirit, of course, won't need replenishing—it's already had its fill. |
