Hideaways' Review
With the closest town being English Harbour—home to Nelson's Dockyard and the 1725 Georgian Royal Navy Yard—you might think you'd be flying to Great Britain for a stay at St. James's Club. But thankfully, you'd be avoiding London fog and heading to much balmier climes on the Caribbean island of Antigua (pronounced An-TEE-gah), an independent state within the British Commonwealth. This dazzling waterfront resort that sprawls over a 100-acre peninsula still demonstrates a proper degree of British aplomb by way of its colonial-style furnishings, club-like ambiance, and genteel service—all without being stuffy or prim. Shortly into your visit, you'll start to feel the warmth of the personal attention from genuinely gracious staff members who go out of their way to ensure you feel welcome. And welcomed you will be, especially when you sink back into the comfy wicker and rattan furnishings of your water-view or hillside retreat, complete with cool tiled floors, soft linens, and a private balcony or patio from which to take in those sparkling views of Mamora Bay.
For all its British dignity, St. James's Club has a lively personality and all the activities to go with it: an array of swimming pools for sunning and swimming, scuba lessons, deep-sea fishing, tennis, and every non-motorized water sport imaginable. Though you might want to head out for an evening on the town, you certainly wouldn't need to since you?ll find any number of dining choices right at hand, from kid-friendly burgers and pizza to Italian with a Caribbean twist. British reserve, indeed! |
