Hideaways' Review
There's something undeniably elite about this beautiful hotel, which easily vies for the prize of swankiest in town. You'll feel it the moment you step into the eclectic lobby with its arresting modern art, 16th-century tapestries, and vases brimming with color under a luminous chandelier. Home-away-from-home for such diverse personages as Catherine Zeta-Jones and the Dalai Lama, the Majestic's atmosphere is clubby chic, from its dark polished paneling and live piano music in the fashionable lounge to the understated but undeniably luxurious guest rooms.
Known locally as the "Art Hotel," the Majestic is a feast for the eyes, with more than 1,000 contemporary works by such prominent artists as Anish Kapoor and Richard Long embellishing its walls and spaces. The hotel is still managed by the Soldevila family who founded it in 1918, and their commitment shines through to the staff, all of whom are extremely helpful, polite, and professional. Guest rooms, some with private terraces or balconies, weave 1920's furniture with current European design, and feature plush carpeting, monochromatic color schemes, and plump sofas and chairs. Up on the roof await special treats—a terraced bar, solarium, The Spa by Natura Bisse, and a refreshing pool. From this aerie, take in the panoramic urban landscape highlighted by Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Familia church, La Pedrera, and Casa Batlló, or muse over the striking cubist mural that crowns the pool. Then head out through the hotel's neoclassical façade onto the sizzling Paseo de Gracia, the city's favorite shopping avenue, and experience the so-very Barcelonan zest for architecture, fashion, style, food, and fun. Just keep watch as you exit through the brass-trimmed revolving door—you never know who you might bump into. |
