Hideaways' Review
A lavish wedding gift from Pope Alexander VII to his niece, Olimpia, Grand Hotel Continental holds the distinction of being the only 5-star luxury hotel within the ancient walls of medieval Siena. This 17th-century palace was faithfully restored in the late 1990s, uncovering many original architectural treasures and shedding light on magnificent frescoes from as far back as the 15th century.
The moment you enter the magnificent hall, you'll be captivated by breathtaking details. High frescoed ceilings are lit by lantern-shaped lamps. Contemporary glass and steel elevators counterbalance the monumental staircase of travertine stone that rises majestically to the upper floors, where your own private work of art awaits. Each of the hotel's 51 rooms and suites is an individual masterpiece, elegantly styled with antique furniture and objets d'art from an array of artists and designers who have left their mark on the hotel over the centuries. Many rooms have vaulted frescoed ceilings, fireplaces, and sitting areas; others open onto their own terraces with views over the Sienese rooftops.
Of course, Grand Hotel Continental is ideally situated right in the historic heart of Siena, steps from the iconic Duomo and within the city's pedestrian shopping district. If you feel like venturing out into the countryside, lovely towns like Pienza, San Gimignano, and Volterra are all an easy day trip away. Later, enjoy a taste of true Tuscan cuisine and relax with friends at the hotel's Sapordivino Wine Bar & Restaurant. Sample delicious local dishes in the atmosphere of a Renaissance piazza, and chat over a glass of wine or two from the hotel?s own wine cellar, carved into the base of the medieval tower. |
